MUSEUM OF GOLD EMBROIDERY

Torzhok is an old Russian town with rich traditions, one of which - gold embroidery – has made the town world famous. In the 13th century skillful craftswomen started to embroider in a gold stitch on leather scraps. Back then, these masterpieces served as money. Even now with their truly magic skills the local mistresses of needlework create marvelous works of art.
The museum features a unique collection of embroidered items. The art of gold embroidery is similar to the jeweler’s art in beauty and complexity. In the museum you will see exquisite ornamentations, accessories, shoes and clothes of the past centuries decorated with gold embroidery. Also very interesting and fascinating are the works of modern masters of gold embroidery.
