SHIRKOV POGOST
Verkhnevolzhye is not only famous for its beautiful nature, but also for its rich and exciting history. Shirkov Pogost is one of the most interesting places here. In the old times settlements and cult pagan constructions were already present here, and more than three centuries ago genius architects built the whole architectural ensemble.
The John the Baptist church built in 1697 is the oldest building of the churchyard.
According to the legend, its history dates back to the immemorial times when unknown merchants went from Novgorod to Moscow and carried two icons of John the Baptist. Having stopped on the high bank to rest, they put the icons down but could later not lift them up. So the icons stayed there, and Shirkov brothers built a church, which still amazes even the professional architects. An original tiered church built of mighty logs (up to 70 cm in diameter) is 40 meters high and looks like a gracious pine tree. This masterpiece of the old Russian architects – Tver Kizhi as Shirkov Pogost is sometimes called – personifies the whole Peno land – a region of ancient forests.
